Phenomenal Music in the Blue

Phenomenal Music in the Blue

Audience members were blown away by the College Music Department’s concert, “Music in the Blue, which took place on 2 and 3 May. From choir to solo, violin and piano to clarinet and guitar, every piece was mesmerising and a superb testament to the varied musical talents of the pupils. Combined with witty introductions of each piece, a beautiful set and pupils dressed to impress in formal attire, audience members were treated to a remarkable evening of entertainment.

At Oakhill, music is an integral part of the school curriculum and is enjoyed by all students from the Pre-Prep, Little Oaks, through Prep School to College. The Music Academy provides students with opportunities to explore music in all its dimensions, to acquire practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge. In addition to the individual musicians, there are more than 120 pupils across four choirs at the school, a vibrant Prep band as well as a College band, and multiple Marimba groups that practice throughout any given week.  Oakhill is also a Trinity Examination Centre for the Garden Route providing music pupils from Oakhill and other schools across the region, the opportunity to obtain international accreditation from examiners abroad.

This show beautifully demonstrated the quality of the Arts at Oakhill. Head of School, Jannie de Villiers, commented, “The value of developing balanced individuals through a holistic curriculum is well documented in educational research.  Top quality productions such as these bear testimony of Oakhill’s commitment to let the Arts thrive alongside the excellence we achieve in our Academics and Sports.  However, the lasting impression to me was simply in observing the energy and joy of our pupils as they delighted their audience of family, friends and members of the broader community with a performance from the top drawer.”
