Old Oaks Alumni Cricketers take on Oakhill

On Tuesday, 9 January 2017, Old Oakhillian cricketers were brought together by the initiative of Oakhill alumni Jonty Pieters to play Old Oaks vs Oakhill cricket.  Many Old Oaks made the effort to travel back to Knysna for the fixture and the school boys and staff joined them during their holiday for this sporting tradition to take place.

The Old Oaks won the toss and elected to bat first in the 45 over game. The open pair of Todd Walker and JJ Strydom got the past pupils off to a solid start, scoring 35 and 34 respectively. The number 4 batsman Cheyne Hare made a well-rounded 66 runs and was the top scorer for the past pupils. The rest of the batting line up all chipped in and posted a total of 289/9 after 45 overs, setting a decent target for the schools boys to chase down.

The most economical bowler in the Oakhill school boy side was JC Colby, bowling 9 overs for 39 runs and taking 2 wickets.  This was JC Colby’s first match for Oakhill as a new student having being awarded the prestigious Barry Richards Oakhill Cricket Bursary from 2017.

Following lunch, a photo shoot and a bit of banter the past pupils and boys took to the field. The opening batting pair of Sam Mvimbi and Athi Kwitchana had to take on the Pieters brothers Josh and Jonty. It didn’t take the bowling pair long and before you knew it the school boys were 29/3 with a massive total to chase down. Stability in the batting line up came along when Shaun Riley took to the field, the young man scored a very mature 27 runs and top scored for the school boys. Shaun Riley helped slow down the wicket taking frenzy of the past pupils. Due to injury in the school boy side one of the youngest past pupils Caleb Bell helped the school boys with the bat. Caleb started off with a bang and pulled the first ball for 4, it didn’t stop there – Caleb hit 8 fours and scored a total 53 runs against the Old Oaks.

The top bowler for the past pupils was Jonty Pieters taking 3 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, the rest of the bowlers and fielders chipped in to bowl the school boys out for 159 runs in 26.3 overs. Winning by 130 runs.

The Dave Pryke past pupils cricket trophy was won this year by the Old Oaks and they will be back in 2018 to defend their title. May this traditional fixture go on for years to come.  Many thanks must go out to the past pupils, parents, staff and school boys who made this fixture possible.
